about

The release of this song will mark its first birthday, as you may recall that the first verse was a short, very different little song I wrote for Valentine's Day 2011. I liked the way the verse went, and decided it'd be nice to turn it into a full song. I'm really happy with how it ended up, and I think it's my favourite off the new album. Also, poetic as it may seem, most of these lyrics are based on actual events from my relationship with Hayley!

lyrics

Roses are red
And violets are purple
But that doesn't rhyme
So instead we say blue
I used to be alone
On Valentine's Day
Thank the Lord for the day I met you

And winter may come
And blow out the candles
But we'll take the sky
And we'll paint it in blue
The air once was cold
On Valentine's Day
But the sunlight came when I met you

We woke before dawn
And danced with the flowers
As the frost on the grass showed its wintergreen hue
I used to believe
Love was Valentine's Day
But I know now it's when I'm with you

And the dewy ground cooled
And sparkled in twilight
As fireworks lit up the skyline above
You were holding my hand
Just like Valentine's Day
And I knew what it was to feel love

Spring will come soon
And don't ever forget how to bloom

All those days I spent alone
How I wish I had known
God had set you aside
My Valentine

September was young
And so was the springtime
And the wind that was blowing
Made everything new
The summer would pass
Before Valentine's Day
But at least then I still would have you

Yeah, I used to be alone
On Valentine's Day
Thank the Lord for the day I met you
